Mission 22

Our June outreach is Mission 22.  This national non-profit organization was founded by Veterans in 2013 to provide support and treatment programs for active service members, Veterans, and their family members and communities.  Their programs are long term, addressing persistent issues such as post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, suicide and other challenges.  Their goal is to raise awareness, enlist support, and end Veteran suicide in America.

The ”22” in their name represents the estimated number of veterans who lose their lives to suicide every day (per 2013 study by US Dept. of Veteran Affairs).  Over 6000 families have been served by this 501c3.  Programs are provided at no cost.  87.8% of your donation goes directly to programs, and 12.2% is used to raise awareness and support for the programs.

Several of our congregation will be walking for Mission 22 on Saturday, June 22 starting at 2.22pm on the new track on Augustana’s campus -south of the hockey stadium. Please join us!

We gather together...

People have been busy! We were blessed to have the woman, Sara who is behind the woven plastic mats for the homeless to come and show us what our mats become after we deliver all your plastic bags to her care. Also thanks for the lesson on how to weave the bags!

Hospice Workers month

Good Shepherd has the best volunteers! For our April outreach we celebrated all hospice workers. The Outreach Team met with several volunteers to make up gift baskets then to deliver them to the hospice houses. Good Shepherd wanted to recognize the care and love these special people bring to this ministry.

Our February Outreach

Our February Outreach will be financial support for two Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) projects.  Episcopal Relief and Development’s mission is to facilitate healthier, more fulfilling lives in communities struggling with hunger, poverty, disaster, and disease.  Our donations will go to two separate projects.

·         Middle East:  Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem & Al-Ahli, Hospital, medicine, supplies (Gaza conflict).

·         Ukraine Crisis:  Humanitarian Aid (Russia conflict).

Please note in the memo line of your check or on your envelope which project your dollars will support.  ERD uses 90% of every dollar collected in support of its projects.

Our November Outreach: Sioux Falls Union Gospel Mission

Founded in 1900, the Union Gospel Mission of Sioux Falls is the 2nd oldest rescue mission in the US.  It is the largest emergency shelter in the Sioux Falls area, providing shelter and meals for an average of 125 men, women and children daily.  Our donations help this organization meet critical needs to persons facing homelessness, including nutritious meals, safe shelter, showers/clean clothes, basic medical care, access to social services/case management, job training resources/education, and daily faith healing through chapel services and Bible study.  Donations can be made online at ugmsiouxfalls.com, or checks can be made payable to Good Shepherd Church with UGM noted in the memo line.  A bin has been placed in the back of the sanctuary to collect items most needed at this time (new underwear, coats, shoes, socks, warm winter clothing, gloves/hats).
